11 uplinger trautman cocOn 15 AUG 1985, the ship's company mustered east of the flagpole in the main parking lot at SUBASE Point Loma to hear the orders read as CDR Uplinger was relieved as CO of the USS WILLIAM H. BATES (SSN 680) by CDR Trautman.

Shortly after the crew presented CDR Uplinger with a retirement gift, a custom hunting rifle to use in the wilds of Michigan as he started his leisure years.
