‍,

Welcome to the USS SHARK (SSN 591) website, and the Cold War Boats family of websites.

Last year, Barry Trosper, your Shark shipmate that was maintaining the shark591.com website, coordinated to transfer responsibility for the site, which Barry could no longer maintain, to the Cold War Boats Association.

You are receiving this email because you were registered on the shark591.com website, and we want to let you know what you can expect from the new shark591.com website and Cold War Boats.

First, your privacy is job one for us. Your email, address, and phone number will never be sold, rented, bartered or given to anybody for any reason, and none of those are visible on the Cold War Boats/Shark websites except to you and the few responsible administrators.

Second, we make it easy to connect with old friends and shipmates without revealing your contact information unless you choose to. Simple send a private message or email by clicking the appropriate links on the website, and you connect, privately.

Third, we are actively preserving unclassified Cold War boat history for your boat (and 394 others!) in the form of photos, stories, documents and more. Our history is too important to allow it to be lost and forgotten.

Fourth, we make it easy to set up, coordinate, and manage reunions. The Shark website in conjuction with Cold War Boats can list your reunion, tally RSVPs, and even collect registration fees, all right through your website - it is designed to make reunions easy.

I could go on, but I'll let you visit the site and see for yourself. I'm still waiting on site material from Barry, but if you have photos, stories, reunion information, or other documents of interest to your fellow Sharks, let me know. I'll get them posted on your behalf.

When you check in, update your user profile. This is how we, and your shipmates, connect with you. Keep it current, and add your other boats to your Command List. This will ensure you show up on the sites of other boats and commands you served on.

Reach out if you have questions or concerns. I want to make this work for you!

Welcome Aboard!

~ Brad Williamson

USS SHARK (SSN 591) Site Commissioned!

image

Cold War Boats has taken over responsibility for the USS SHARK (SSN 591) website. We are in the process of transferring all material from the old site (shark591.com) courtesy of Barry R. Trosper. Check in often as we will be added new material frequently.

The new USS SHARK (SSN 591) site can be found on the Cold War Boats site at www.coldwarboats.org, then following the menus FAST ATTACKS >> SKIPJACK CLASS >> USS SHARK (SSN 591). Additionally, you can use the original URL, www.shark591.com, to go directly to the site.

If you were registered at shark591.com, you are already included in the Cold War Boats Master Sailing List. Simply attempt to log in using either the LOGIN/REGISTER button in the upper right corner of every page, or the LOG IN/LOG OUT link on the WATCH, QUARTER, AND STATION BILL menu midway down the right column. When the login popup appears, select"Forgot your username or password? Click here for a reminder." Enter your email address, and your user name will be sent to you. Follow the same steps to reset your password, and you will be able to create a new password for Cold War Boats.

Please contact me at admin@coldwarboats.org directly if you have any trouble logging in.

If you have photos, stories, or artifacts related to the 591, reach out to me until we get a Site Lead volunteered! I'll make sure it gets on the Shark site. If you're planning a Shark reunion, again, let me know. The new Shark website has a reunion function already built in that will let you organize, promote, and keep track of attendees and events.

All Shark shipmates are invited to make the USS SHARK (SSN 591) site on Cold War Boats their new on-line home.

Welcome Aboard!

USS SHARK (SSN 591) Master Sailing List

image

Each one of the 500 or so Cold War Boats submarines or related commands has a Master Sailing List. Ultimately, these lists will identify every shipmate that served on a specific boat or support command.

For now, every currently registered shipmate is listed, and many of our boats/commands have additional shipmates that have been added by dedicated volunteers poring over Enlisted and Officer Personnel Diaries.

The USS SHARK (SSN 591), by virtue of making Cold War Boats its dedicated boat website, has incorporated the roster of the now defunct shark591.com site, bring the Shark's current total of former officers and crew to 861.

You can see it at https://coldwarboats.org/the-men-591/master-sailing-list-591. You must be registered and logged in to view the Sailing Lists.

If you were listed on the old Shark website, take a minute to update your user profile, which you can reach by clicking on your name in the Current Watchsection menu at the top of the right column if you are logged in, or any other place your name appears.

Make a point of updating your email, phone number and address so you can be reached, and add any other boats or commands you served on to your profile. This will ensure that your name appears on the Master Sailing List of each of those commands.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Periscope Newsletters Posted

"PERISCOPE" newsletter - 19 APR 1968 by SUBFLOTONE at SUBASE POINT LOMA.

The Cold War Boats website has posted three logroom archive articles from the spring of 1968, courtesy of Carl Seitz, a shipmate from the USS HALIBUT (SSGN 587). These bi-monthly newsletters, titled "Periscope," were published by SUBMARINE FLOTILLA ONE at SUBASE POINT LOMA and offer a fascinating glimpse into life aboard submarines during the late sixties.

periscope front page 680419The first of our Periscopes, from April 19, 1968, highlights the return of the USS SEGUNDO (SS 398) and the USS CAIMAN (AGSS 323) from WestPac, the USS FLORIKAN (ASR 9) on her twenty-fifth anniversary, the 68th anniversary celebration of the Submarine Service, along with advancements and recognition of the contributions of shipmates of all local commands.

The second Periscope, from May 03, 1968, includes successful advancements of USS NEREUS (AS 17), the largest group in the ship’s history. Noted is the Ballast Point visit by the HMS TABARD (S 42) and recent adventures of the USS MEDREGAL (AGSS 480) after changing her homeport to San Diego and logging another WestPac. A visit to San Fransisco by the USS NEREUS (AS 17), and the decommissioning the USS ARCHERFISH (AGSS 311) fill the newsletter with a great deal of interesting news.

periscope front page 680503Finally, the third Periscope, dated May 29, 1968, offers a timely tribute to the boats and men lost during WWII and a moving memoriam to those that have gone before us. The return of the USS BUGARA (SS 331), a new skipper for the USS VOLADOR (SS 490) (and a new baby for the skipper and his bride!) and the issue wraps up with local news, sporting activity, and other highlights.

These Periscopes offer a brief glimpse into daily life in the Navy of the late Sixties, whether at a shore command, a tender, or aboard a submarine. They include news about sports teams, social events, wives clubs, and, revealing how much the world has changed in fifty-five years, a bikini-clad pin-up in almost every issue!

These newsletters are an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of submarines and the Cold War era. They showcase the technological advancements and strategic maneuvers that were crucial to the United States' efforts to maintain its military dominance during this period. We are grateful to Carl Seitz for sharing these articles with us and are pleased to make them available to registered users of coldwarboats.org.

I hope that they provide a deeper periscope front page 680529understanding of this critical period in our history and the sacrifices made by those who served aboard submarines during this time.

They can be found in the Carl Seitz Collection:

HOMEPORT >> HISTORY & HERITAGE >> COLLECTIONS >> HALIBUT HISTORY BY CARL SEITZ or,

in SUBASE POINT LOMA’s Logroom Archive at:

HOMEPORT >> SUPPORT COMMANDS >> SUBMARINE BASES >> SUBASE POINT LOMA >> THE LOGROOM >> ARCHIVES >> PUBLICATIONS

Click on either of the above links to find the Periscopes, and remember you must be registered and logged in to view them.

 THE COLD WAR BOATS ASSOCIATION

The Cold War Boats Association exists in service to the men who served on the submarines of the United States Navy's Submarine Service between the end of World War II and the demise of the Soviet Union in December, 1992, those sailors that supported them, their families, friends, and associates.

  • Assisting shipmates from years ago in reconnecting, simply, easily, and without compromising their privacy,
  • Preserving the unclassified history of Cold War submarine crews and their boats in the form of photographs, stories, artifacts, and audio or video recordings, and
  • Honoring the sailors and families who sacrificed so much to help bring an end to the Cold War.
